University cuts will hamper future investment

Government plans to cut spending on universities will hinder future investments, it has been claimed.

According to independent UK university guide push.co.uk, the decision to limit funding for this year is ''short sighted''.

Indeed, Johnny Rich, editor of the site, said the cuts will effect research grants as well as the student experience.

"Cuts this savage are going to have an effect and I believe it is short sighted because not all spending is the same. You can't just say 'cut everything by a third'. If you cut education, you cut your investment for the future, you cut your way out of trouble," he confirmed.

"With universities being cut away like overgrown hedges we're going to leave the hedgerow looking very bare and without anywhere for new growth to establish."

Mr Rich's comments follow news that there will only be 10,000 extra university places available this year, as opposed to the 20,000 originally planned by the previous government and £670 million will be cut from the Department for Education.
