Teachers need more SEN training

All those entering into teaching jobs should be given at least some special education needs (SEN) training, it has been claimed.

According to Independent Parental Special Education Advice (IPSEA), the current training offered to teachers should be increased.

Indeed, Jane McConnell, chief executive at IPSEA explains that before the current spending review began the government was looking to increase the amount of training which was offered to trainee teachers in the area.

"A qualification in SEN indicates that teachers have a specialist interest in SEN. What is most important is that a teacher is willing and able to differentiate the curriculum they are teaching to meet the needs of all children in their class," she says.

"They need to have access to specialist advice and support when they need it to deal with specific issues speedily as they arise."

IPSEA recommends that parents take independent advice surrounding the support a child may need to access an appropriate education at a SEN school.
