The MP has claimed that the number of foreign students entering into the UK has reached an ''unsustainable'' level and questioned whether institutions were succeeding in attracting only the best students.
However, the National Union of Students (NUS) has dismissed Mr Green's comments
Aaron Porter, president of the NUS, said that the government should be proud that the UK was attracting a large number of overseas students, who helped to contribute £12.5 billion to the country's economy every year.
"To suggest that the levels of those coming to the UK to study is too high is a politically motivated misinterpretation of the huge contribution which international students make to our colleges, universities and the economy," he added
According to a Home Office study, some 185,000 students entered the UK from non-European Union countries in 2004.
