The Department

The departmental team is a strong one. There are fourteen members of staff at present. The approach to learning promoted by the team is defined by a commitment to innovative and effective teaching, delivered in a combination of team taught and single taught lessons. Students are taught in mixed ability groups at all key stages with a strong focus on developing high levels of literacy skills in all students.

Teaching and Learning

Teaching takes place in a well-equipped English suite with rooms varying in size from large team teaching spaces to smaller seminar rooms, allowing for flexibility in teaching method and style. The English department benefits from a 360 seat theatre, a lecture theatre seating 100 students, media facilities including a radio and editing suite and a library which, in addition to the more traditional facilities, houses 78 PCs.

Brooke Weston students are encouraged to become highly motivated independent learners and are encouraged through differentiated learning activities at four levels, to develop high levels of knowledge, skills and technological understanding. Students are taught in mixed ability groups at all key stages. To fully involve them in their learning students are provided with a programme of study at the beginning of each term. Their work is carefully monitored and assessed regularly and students are involved in individual target setting and further development.

Courses

Key Stage 3 is delivered over two-years commencing in Year 7. Students subsequently follow a programme of induction towards GCSE. All Key Stage 4 students work towards GCSE English and English Literature, with a further GCSE option available in Media Studies. Many popular options are offered at AS and A-Level: English Language, English Literature, Media Studies, English Language and English Literature.

Extra-curricular activities

The department organises a series of theatre trips, theatre company visits and works in close collaboration with the Library in organising extra-curricular activities including competitions, author visits, reading groups and a Literacy support group.
